The source recounted, “We observed the incident. Chris Uba’s convoy encountered the gunmen stationed at UGA junction, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Uba managed to escape unharmed due to his bulletproof vehicle, but the police officers lost their lives.”
“Val Ozigbo, returning from Owerri with his family, noticed an aggressively approaching convoy trying to force him off the road. He quickly instructed his driver to yield, allowing the other convoy to pass. Shortly after overtaking Ozigbo, the attackers encountered the gunmen at UGA junction, resulting in the tragic demise of two police officers. Ozigbo, who had parked during the incident, later learned that the targeted convoy belonged to Uba.”
The attackers’ apparent intention was to abduct the politician, and while numerous injuries were reported, it remained unclear if anyone was kidnapped.
In response to the incident, the state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, issued a press release stating that a thorough manhunt had been initiated for the assailants.
The release stated, “The Anambra State Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt for armed insurgents who infiltrated from a neighboring state and killed two police personnel on December 28, 2023, around 6:30 p.m.”
The attackers, disguised in military attire, seemed to be on a kidnapping mission. Upon encountering two armed police officers, they opened fire, prompting a retaliatory response from other personnel. The exchange of gunfire forced the assailants to flee, and a police-led mobile Forward Operating Base swiftly responded to the scene.
The law enforcement team recovered a Lexus SUV used by the gang, successfully defusing an improvised explosive device found in the vehicle. Additionally, an AK-47 rifle belonging to one of the slain officers was recovered.
Commending the efforts of the police personnel, Commissioner of Police CP Aderemi Adeoye declared the weekend and Christmas holidays as special working days for all officers and urged them not to be demoralized by the sacrifice made by their colleagues. He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers and vowed to ensure that the personnel did not die in vain. The commissioner called for increased vigilance and reassured the use of technology in tracking down the criminals responsible for the attack on the police personnel.
