Hamzat Makes Major Revelation: Tinubu Called Me From New York To Serve In His Government

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has recalled how President Bola Tinubu invited him to return from New York in 2005 to join the Lagos State Government.

Hamzat made the disclosure on Sunday while speaking at the 70th Harvest Anniversary and Thanksgiving Service of the Cherubim and Seraphim Society, Olorunsogo Parish, Ese-Ofin, Lagos.

According to him, he was working in New York when Tinubu, who was then the governor of Lagos State, visited the city and met him while he was presenting a paper. Hamzat said Tinubu subsequently invited him to return to Nigeria and join his administration.

He explained that he had since served Lagos in several capacities, including Commissioner for Science and Technology and Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, before becoming deputy governor.

Hamzat also emphasised his familiarity with the history and political development of Lagos, arguing that knowledge of the state’s background is important for anyone seeking to govern it.

“I know the people that have ruled this state before, and if I have any problems on land issues, I know where to go. Though nobody is perfect, I understand Lagos thoroughly,” he said.

His account is consistent with public records showing that Hamzat joined Tinubu’s administration in 2005 as Commissioner for Science and Technology and was later retained in the role under Governor Babatunde Fashola. He subsequently served as Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure.

Hamzat also cautioned Lagos residents to carefully consider campaign promises ahead of elections, saying politicians would make various promises while seeking votes.

He said Lagos should not be treated as a place for inexperienced leadership, stressing the importance of understanding the state’s economy, history and governance structure.

“We in APC will not lie because we know the situation of things in the state. Lagos is more important than being used for jokes,” Hamzat said.

He further highlighted Lagos’ contribution to Nigeria’s economy, arguing that the state’s significance requires leadership with an understanding of its responsibilities and challenges.

Hamzat also urged Nigerians to continue praying for the country, saying he believed God had a purpose for Nigeria and its people.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Hamzat’s remarks highlighted his long political and administrative association with Lagos, dating back to his entry into the state cabinet in 2005.
