Hamzat urged residents to take proactive measures, citing examples from the United Kingdom and New York City, where people are relocating due to climate-related challenges. He pointed out that Lagos, with its 180-kilometer coastline, is surrounded by water, making it particularly susceptible to rising sea levels.

“Today, Lagos and New York City are sinking,” he stated, outlining three major threats to the state: extreme heat, climate change, and rising sea levels. He called for a realignment of priorities over the next 20 to 25 years to identify which areas need protection.

In his opening remarks, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Mr. Lawal Pedro SAN noted that the meeting aimed to reduce government litigation, easing the burden on the justice system caused by unnecessary cases.

In related news, the Ogun State government has advised residents in flood-prone areas to move to higher ground following recent water releases from the Oyan Dam. Areas affected include Isheri, Riverview Estate, Oshorun Estate, OPIC Estate, Arepo, Mawere, Akute, Alagbole, Orimerunmu, and Magboro. Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya emphasized that the release was essential to prevent potential damage and assured residents that floodwaters would begin to recede significantly starting Friday, October 25, through dredged waterways and canals.
