FG Explains Reasons Behind Flight Disruptions And CancellationsMichael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), has identified a shortage of operating airlines as the primary reason for flight disruptions and cancellations in Nigeria. Speaking at the Civil Aviation Conference in Abuja, themed “Building a Viable Aviation Industry for National Economic Growth and Development,” Achimugu highlighted the impact of this shortage on the aviation sector.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
He noted that the recent signing of the Cape Town Convention and the Irrevocable De-Registration and Export Request Authorisation (IDERA) agreements could enhance airlines’ access to aircraft. This change is expected to help reduce flight disruptions, lower ticket prices, and promote growth in both the aviation industry and the broader economy.
Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, Chairman of United Nigerian Airlines and the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON), previously emphasized that the lack of aircraft is driving up air ticket prices in the country. Achimugu echoed concerns from Minister of Aviation Festus Keyamo and NCAA CEO Chris Najomo regarding the capacity challenges that prevent the industry from delivering optimal services.
“We face a capacity issue in Nigeria. There simply aren’t enough aircraft to transport passengers across the country,” Achimugu stated, adding that the truth of the situation must be acknowledged to address the problem.
He emphasized that while capacity issues persist, steps are being taken to resolve them. The signing of the Cape Town Convention and the revised IDERA advisory circular will facilitate the entry of more planes into Nigeria. With an adequate fleet, flight disruptions are expected to decrease significantly.
Achimugu explained that delays and cancellations disrupt the entire operational schedule, as airlines lack sufficient alternative aircraft. “If airlines had enough planes, these disruptions would not occur,” he asserted.
Additionally, he mentioned that the NCAA is collaborating with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to implement adjustments at certain airports aimed at mitigating flight delays and disruptions.
