The Nigerian Presidency refuted claims on Tuesday that the United Arab Emirates had lifted its visa ban on Nigerians.
The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information, Bayo Onanuga, shared this information via his X handle on Tuesday.
“UAE has not resumed visa issuance to Nigerians. The document in circulation is not authorized either by the Nigerian government or the UAE,” he wrote.
Earlier, Onanuga had shared a document indicating that the UAE had lifted its visa ban on Nigerians after a two-year diplomatic rift.
The viral document shared by Onanuga, as seen by SaharaReporters, stated that the UAE had announced the resumption of visa services for Nigerian citizens intending to visit the country effective March 4, 2024.
It has been approximately two years since the Dubai government imposed visa restrictions on Nigerians.
The UAE implemented these restrictions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and certain behaviors exhibited by nationals of various countries. Nigeria and the UAE have also been embroiled in a diplomatic dispute regarding flight allocations.
Consequently, the Middle Eastern nation imposed travel restrictions on citizens of approximately 20 African countries, including Nigeria.
Aisha Yesufu, a prominent activist took to her X handle to react to the controversy caused by the miscalculated tweet linked to Bayo Onanuga.
“He thinks the same rigging can be applied to everything”, she remarked.
