The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern caution to Nigerians regarding the dangers of consuming counterfeit alcohol. According to the agency, fake alcohol consumption can result in severe health complications such as slow breathing, abdominal pain, kidney failure, and even death.
In a statement delivered by its Resident Media Consultant, Sayo Akintola, NAFDAC emphasized the potential risks associated with methanol, a substance commonly found in fake vodka, which can lead to permanent blindness.
“Consuming adulterated alcohol can trigger various symptoms including nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, dizziness, skin discoloration, irregular breathing, lowered body temperature, unconsciousness, and in severe cases, organ failure or fatality,” the statement cautioned.
Citing a report from the World Health Organization (WHO), NAFDAC highlighted the global toll of over three million deaths attributed to alcohol poisoning. The agency urged Nigerians to exercise vigilance by verifying the authenticity of branded drinks before consumption, emphasizing the importance of purchasing only NAFDAC registered beverages from reputable and licensed retailers, bars, and supermarkets.
NAFDAC also stressed the significance of examining manufacturer contact details and addresses on product packaging.
