Heartbreak And Silence: Why Cristiano Ronaldo Was Absent At Diogo Jota’s Funeral

The absence of Portugal’s football legend, Cristiano Ronaldo, at Diogo Jota’s funeral on Saturday did not go unnoticed by fans and mourners alike.

The funeral, held in Jota’s hometown of Gondomar near Porto, followed the heartbreaking car accident that claimed the lives of the Liverpool forward and his brother, André Silva, on Thursday, July 3. The tragedy sent a wave of grief across Portugal and the global football community, leaving teammates, supporters, and loved ones in mourning.

During the solemn ceremony, the chapel was filled with sorrow and tributes. Liverpool teammates including Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson attended, each placing red floral arrangements at the altar in memory of their fallen colleague.

Also in attendance were several members of Portugal’s national team, including Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and João Neves, who stood in silent mourning. A tearful Neves, having flown in from the United States after Club World Cup duties with Al-Hilal, served as one of the pallbearers.

Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, along with players like Curtis Jones, Alexis Mac Allister, Harvey Elliott, Wataru Endo, Darwin Núñez, and Federico Chiesa, were all present. Former players such as Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Caoimhin Kelleher also came to pay their respects.

However, Ronaldo, the captain of the national team and one of Jota’s most celebrated teammates, was notably absent.

According to Mirror Football, Ronaldo chose to stay away out of respect for the solemn occasion, fearing that his presence might draw unwanted media attention and shift focus away from the grieving families and the memory of Diogo and André.

Gondomar, a close-knit community, was mourning two of its own. Aware of the commotion his presence could stir, Ronaldo reportedly felt that staying away was the most respectful choice.

The Al-Nassr star, who has been spending more time away from the spotlight with his family, shared his heartbreak on Instagram shortly after the news broke. In his tribute, he wrote:

“It doesn’t make sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married.
To your family, your wife, and your children, I send my condolences and wish them all the strength in the world.
I know you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”
