Historic Qualification! Algeria, Morocco Book Places At 2027 Women’s World Cup

Algeria and Morocco have secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil after reaching the semi-finals of the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Algeria made history by earning their first-ever qualification for the global tournament after coming from behind to defeat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in their quarter-final clash.

Morocco also booked their ticket to Brazil after defeating defending African champions South Africa 2-1.

Under the qualification format, the four WAFCON semi-finalists automatically earn places at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

For Algeria, the achievement represents a major milestone in the development of women’s football in the country.

The North Africans had to recover from an early setback against Côte d’Ivoire before scoring twice to complete a dramatic comeback and secure their place in the last four.

Their semi-final qualification means Algeria will make their debut at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil in 2027.

Morocco, meanwhile, continued their impressive campaign by overcoming defending champions South Africa 2-1.

The victory secured the hosts a place in the WAFCON semi-finals and, in turn, automatic qualification for the global tournament.

Morocco will now turn their attention to the continental title while also preparing for their second appearance on the world stage.

Two More African Teams To Qualify Automatically

Two additional African nations will join Algeria and Morocco at the 2027 Women’s World Cup following the remaining WAFCON quarter-final fixtures.

Cameroon will face Nigeria on Sunday, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals and automatically securing a World Cup ticket.

In the other quarter-final, Malawi will take on Ghana.

The winners of both encounters will earn automatic qualification for Brazil 2027 by reaching the WAFCON semi-finals.

For Nigeria, the Super Falcons will have an opportunity to secure their place at the World Cup by defeating Cameroon.

Côte d’Ivoire, South Africa Retain World Cup Hopes

Despite their quarter-final defeats, Côte d’Ivoire and South Africa remain in contention for places at the 2027 World Cup.

The two defeated quarter-finalists will meet in a play-off on August 13 as part of the qualification process.

The winner of that encounter will advance to the 2027 Women’s World Cup alongside one of the other losing quarter-finalists, giving the eliminated teams another route to Brazil.

With Algeria and Morocco already qualified, two more African teams will secure automatic qualification after the remaining quarter-final matches, while the defeated nations will continue their World Cup campaigns through the play-off route.
