Historic Setback? Jega Reveals Why Fubara’s Re-Election Bid Was Allegedly Shut Down

Jega made the statement during an appearance on Arise Television on Friday while reacting to Fubara’s decision to pull out of the APC governorship primary in Rivers State just hours before the exercise.

According to him, anyone who had closely followed the political crisis in Rivers State over the past three years would not be surprised by the development.

“What happened in Rivers could not have shocked anyone who has monitored events in the state over the last three years,” Jega said.

He added that Fubara’s case was unprecedented, even among governors who previously defected from other political parties into the APC.

Jega further suggested that the governor’s withdrawal may have been part of the political truce facilitated by President Bola Tinubu between Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

He explained that the reported agreement appeared to involve lawmakers loyal to Wike dropping impeachment moves against Fubara, while the governor, in return, would forgo seeking re-election in 2027.

Meanwhile, Fubara officially announced his withdrawal from the APC governorship primary scheduled for Thursday in Rivers State through a statement personally signed on Wednesday night titled, “My Decision to Withdraw from the Rivers State Gubernatorial Primaries.”

The governor stated that the decision came after broad consultations with family, friends, and political allies, adding that he would support whoever eventually emerges as the APC governorship candidate.
