American actor and stand-up comedian Reggie McFadden, best known for his appearances on Def Comedy Jam and the popular 1990s sketch comedy series In Living Color, has died at the age of 57.
McFadden’s sister, best-selling author Bernice McFadden, disclosed that the United States State Department informed the family that the comedian died in Tanzania, where he had lived for about 18 years.
According to the family, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, as they have yet to establish when he died or determine the cause of death.
McFadden was born on November 30, 1968, and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. An online biography described comedy as an avenue through which he sought to escape the difficult environment in which he was raised.
He began his television career with an appearance on HBO’s Def Comedy Jam in 1991. After relocating to Los Angeles, he secured roles in several television productions, including Martin, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, Moesha and Coach.
However, his most notable television credit came from In Living Color, where he appeared during the show’s fifth and final season in 1993 and 1994. He featured in 23 episodes and took part in sketches including “Wheel of Dozens,” “All Up in the Family” and the “Dirty Dozens Tournament of Champions.”
McFadden later starred in the Fox comedy series Getting Personal, which ran briefly in 1998. His film credits included Jacob’s Ladder, Minor Adjustments and Little Nicky.
He also appeared in an episode of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2001, playing Officer Burt, the neighbour of the show’s central character, Larry David.
According to Bush Radio Academy, McFadden maintained an active career in comedy beyond television and film. He had his own comedy special on Comedy Central and regularly performed at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
McFadden later established a life in Tanzania, where he reportedly ventured into both entertainment and business. His Facebook page identified him as the owner of Olduvai Records, a Tanzanian gold mining and entertainment production company.
The company reportedly secured a distribution agreement with Sony Music’s The Orchard in New York to distribute its music and audiovisual productions internationally. In May 2025, McFadden released an album titled ENJOY, Vol. 1 through the label.
Prof. Rel Dowdell, director of film studies at Hampton University, described McFadden as a highly talented and experienced comedian and actor whose career reflected his dedication and willingness to explore diverse creative opportunities.
McFadden is survived by his mother, Vivian; sisters Bernice and Misty; brother Kris; and sons Jaron and Myles.
His death has prompted tributes from those who knew his work, with his career remembered for his contributions to American comedy, television and film.
