For NnHope amdi Kanu’s Release Grows With Bianca Ojukwu’s Recent AppointmentThe continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has brought renewed attention to President Bola Tinubu’s recent appointment of Bianca Ojukwu as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. Stakeholders are debating whether this move could pave the way for reconciliation between the Southeast and the broader Nigerian community.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a cabinet reshuffle, President Tinubu appointed five new ministers, removed seven, and reassigned ten to new roles. Bianca Ojukwu joins fellow Southeastern ministers such as Doris Uzoka-Anite (Minister of State for Finance), Uche Nnaji (Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology), and David Umahi (Minister of Works).

A Path to National Healing

Some view Ojukwu’s appointment as a strategic decision reflecting the president’s recognition of the need for national healing. Katchi Ononuju, Director General of the Heritage Centre, noted that this appointment signifies the president’s attempt to unify the nation. He stated, “The President understands that his election was supported by a political party and is now focused on healing the country.”

However, Ononuju cautioned that while the appointment is significant, it should not be seen as a quick fix. He emphasized that true inclusion requires more than symbolic gestures and must be backed by actionable policies. “Bianca’s role represents a memory—not the realities facing people today. The appointment is thoughtful, but actions must validate the rhetoric. If the president genuinely wants unity, he must demonstrate this through tangible efforts.”

Political Solutions and Kanu’s Situation

Ononuju further expressed skepticism about Bianca’s ability to influence a political resolution for Kanu’s release, stating that such decisions ultimately rest with the Nigerian government. “The government must recognize the necessity of a negotiated release for Kanu, which has been highlighted by Southeastern leaders in discussions with the Minister of Justice,” he explained.

He pointed out that while there have been negotiations for other individuals involved in similar agitations, Kanu deserves the same consideration. “This isn’t unprecedented; we’ve seen negotiated releases before. Kanu’s case should be treated similarly.”

Potential for Change Under Tinubu

On the possibility of Kanu’s release, Ononuju suggested that Tinubu may seek to distance himself from the legacy of former President Muhammadu Buhari. “With Buhari’s divisive policies no longer in play, there’s a real chance for Tinubu to release Kanu. This would not only be a significant gesture but could also foster peace in the Southeast, which holds a crucial position in Nigeria’s economy.”

Bianca’s Role in Kanu’s Future

Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s legal representative, underscored Bianca’s potential to advocate for Kanu’s release. He mentioned her prior public calls for Kanu’s freedom and suggested that, as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, she could influence the President regarding the international repercussions of Kanu’s continued detention.

“Lady Bianca is well-positioned to inform the President about the negative impact that Kanu’s detention has on Nigeria’s global image. Her understanding of the situation could lead to a meaningful dialogue about Kanu’s future,” Ejimakor noted.

Conclusion

Activist lawyer Madubuachi Idam characterized Ojukwu’s appointment as a strategic move that could improve the chances of Kanu’s release and enhance the reputation of Tinubu’s administration in the Southeast. “This appointment is commendable, and alongside Kanu’s release, it could significantly improve perceptions of the government,” he stated.

While many remain hopeful about the implications of Bianca Ojukwu’s appointment, the need for genuine actions that address the underlying issues remains crucial for achieving lasting peace and unity in Nigeria
