The victims were returning from the 2024 National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when the fatal crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday along the Kaduna-Kano Expressway near Gadar Yankifi.
The accident involved a coaster bus owned by the Kano State Government with registration number KN 041 A17, carrying 24 passengers — 23 men and one woman. According to the FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, the bus veered off the road, resulting in the deaths of 21 male passengers at the scene, while three others, including the only female passenger, sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital.
“The bus, carrying athletes and officials, unfortunately crashed, and 21 passengers lost their lives instantly. Only three survived with injuries and were hospitalized,” Ogungbemide confirmed.
Those who died included wrestlers, kickboxers, journalists, referees, association secretaries, medical personnel, and drivers. Among them was Imam Umar Fagge, a football referee and younger brother to Umar Fagge, the acting chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed described the incident as a heart-wrenching national loss, urging commercial transport operators to prioritize driver rest periods and avoid night travel, especially under poor visibility conditions.
“This crash, which occurred during a long overnight trip, likely stemmed from driver fatigue and excessive speed,” he said. “Transport companies must enforce rest breaks and reconsider risky night journeys.”
President Bola Tinubu, reacting to the tragedy, called it a devastating national loss, noting that it cast a shadow over the spirit of unity and excellence represented by the National Sports Festival.
In a statement via his media aide Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said, “This is a heartbreaking blow to the nation. We must honour these fallen athletes by ensuring safer travel measures across the country.”
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who hosted the festival, expressed deep sorrow over the incident, saying he was “shattered” by the deaths of athletes who had proudly represented Kano.
Kano’s Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, described the loss as “an incredibly painful moment.”
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also reacted on X (formerly Twitter), expressing that he was “heartbroken” and noting that the deceased represented some of Nigeria’s brightest talents, now lost in their prime.
