His body was discovered on the morning of Thursday, September 18, 2025, by officers who had gone to pick him up for an official assignment.
According to a source who spoke with The Guardian, repeated knocks on his door went unanswered, prompting the hotel management to intervene.
“When the door was finally opened, he was found lifeless,” the source revealed.
Ogbonna, who only assumed office in Cross River last month after replacing Mrs. Rachel Umebuali, had been expected to lead a fresh drive against drug trafficking in the state. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through the agency and the wider security community.
Confirming the incident, the Cross River Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Irene Ugbo-Obase, said the cause of death had not yet been established.
“I can confirm to you that it is true, but what led to the death is what I can’t readily tell you,” she stated.
Ogbonna’s demise comes at a time when Calabar is grappling with rising insecurity. In recent weeks, at least three other bodies have been discovered in different parts of the city — including that of a headless teenager behind the Cross River Basin Authority in Ikot Effanga Mkpa, an unidentified corpse at the NYSC Secretariat entrance along Murtala Mohammed Highway, and another body recovered around Marian.
