The proposed legislation, titled “Bill for an Act to Establish Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences in Item Bende to Make Comprehensive Provisions for its Due Management and Administration and for Related Matters,” is sponsored by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Hon. Wole Oke, and five other lawmakers.

Presenting the Bill’s general principles, Hon. Oke explained that it aims to create a university tasked with providing full-time training leading to the award of degrees in medical and health sciences.

He emphasized the growing importance of specialized medical universities in Nigeria, given the rising demand for medical and health professionals, particularly considering the loss of trained personnel to other countries.

Hon. Oke highlighted the university’s role in addressing the challenges posed by the external migration of medical and allied health professionals seeking opportunities abroad.

He stressed that the establishment of this university would promote learning, offering individuals the chance to pursue higher education in Medicine and other Health Sciences without discrimination based on race, creed, sex, or political conviction.
