News of the intended purchase stirred public debate, with several Nigerians expressing their concerns over what they perceived as wasteful spending, especially given the country’s current economic challenges.
However, the Green Chamber, in its clarification, stated that such narratives are “misleading.” Emphasizing that the cars in question are “utility operational vehicles” designated for oversight functions tied to their duties in the standing committees. Furthermore, they are not personal gifts but remain the property of the National Assembly throughout the four-year tenure of each member.
Highlighting the existing practices, the House pointed out that unelected officials in the Executive arm of government, from the Director level upwards, usually have official vehicles attached to their offices. They also clarified that the cars would remain the property of the National Assembly after the 10th Assembly’s tenure ends in 2027. If members wish to own these vehicles, they would be required to pay the outstanding value, given the prevailing government asset deboarding policy.
Stressing their commitment to serving Nigerians in every corner of the country, the House explained that these vehicles are necessary to access even the most remote parts of the nation, ensuring effective representation and oversight.
In the statement, the House further highlighted its commitment to reducing the cost of governance. They shared data indicating that the Legislature’s budget as a percentage of the national budget has been decreasing over the past decade, and it currently stands at a mere 0.5% of the Federal budget.
The statement ends by emphasizing that the vehicles are essential tools for work and not symbols of status or entitlement. The House reiterates its dedication to transparent governance and the effective representation of Nigerians.
The press release was signed by Akin Rotimi, Jr., MHR, the House Spokesman and Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs.
