How A 106-Year-Old Single Woman Achieved A Long Life: Her Key To Longevity

Mary attributes her longevity to avoiding alcohol, smoking, and romantic pursuits. She lived with her sisters in Cheshire until a month ago and says, “You just get up and get on with the day. You live every day, every minute, without realizing how time adds up.”

She emphasizes the importance of humor, noting, “I’ve got a sense of humor, and it gets you through tough times. Life hasn’t always been happy; it’s had its share of sadness.”

During World War II, Mary had a brief relationship with an RAF man who died shortly after the war. Following this, she embraced a life of adventure, working in 14 different jobs throughout her career, including roles as a cleaner, weaver, cinema usher, and even working on General Montgomery’s car at Chrysler.

Mary recalls the wartime bombings vividly, saying, “I remember the bombs, the incendiary bombs—everywhere shattered. Once you’ve heard one, you never want to hear another.”

Rather than marrying, Mary enjoyed the company of her two sisters, Ruth and Dorothy, who also lost their boyfriends during the war. “We were very close-knit. We did everything together—housework, decorating, gardening. We didn’t need anyone else; we had each other.”

Mary appreciates her remaining family and friends, including a new neighbor who is 104. Reflecting on her life, she said, “It’s all been interesting. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”

Mary has received birthday cards from Queen Elizabeth for her 100th and from King Charles and Queen Camilla for her 105th.

Her cousin, Henry Hesketh, 89, described her as “wonderful” and highlighted her positive outlook and sense of humor as key reasons for her longevity. “She’s always got a joke for you every five minutes. She looks on the bright side all the time, and I think that’s why she’s still with us.
