A Nigerian medical doctor, Obianma Onyia, has stated that men who insist on splitting household bills 50-50 with their wives should feel ashamed.

The 53-year-old mother of three medical professionals shared her views in a Facebook post on Monday, September 8, 2025.

According to Dr. Onyia, women already contribute immensely to the home by managing household chores, cooking, cleaning, giving birth, and raising children.

She wrote: “Come o! Ndi 50:50 men, you ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Why are you a man if you cannot pay most of the bills?”

The doctor emphasized that real women won’t respect men who refuse to take financial responsibility, noting that this is one reason why many working-class women today prefer to stay single.

Addressing the argument about what women contribute, she stated: the woman herself is the table. Even without a career or income, she creates a home, manages daily responsibilities, raises children, tends to emotional and physical needs, and sometimes supports financially when necessary.

Expecting her to hand over half of her earnings, she argued, is unreasonable.

She further questioned women advocating for the 50:50 model: if you willingly carry this load, are you immune to the consequences of “saving” men from doing their part?
