How Kanu’s Release and Constitutional Restructuring Could Save Nigeria, According To Igbo Leaders

In a letter dated September 16, 2024, signed by President Chief Dr. Sylvester Onyia and Secretary Dr. Godson Obiagwu, the group highlighted their position.

The letter recalls that in 2017, after Kanu’s release from detention, prominent figures including the late Prof. Ben Nwabueze, Evangelist Elliot U. Uko, and South-East governors convened in Enugu to address Biafran demands.

On August 30, 2017, Kanu presented several requests to the South-East governors, led by Engr. Dave Umahi. His demands included elevating Enugu to an international airport, dredging the River Niger, upgrading Owerri airport to a cargo facility, enhancing the Port Harcourt seaports, and reviving defunct industries in the South-East and South-South regions to create job opportunities for youth and graduates.

The group noted that Kanu’s demands were not met, leading to his call for a referendum on Biafran status. Prof. Ben Nwabueze then suggested that Nigeria would benefit from a restructuring based on the 1960-1963 Constitution.

Kanu accepted this proposal out of respect for Prof. Nwabueze. However, shortly afterward, security forces raided Kanu’s home in Isiama Afaraukwu Ibeku, Umuahia North Abia State, resulting in the deaths of twenty-eight individuals. Many other Biafrans in detention were killed without proper documentation.

The letter concludes that both Northern and Southern leaders now agree on the need for Nigeria’s restructuring, given the ongoing detention of Kanu and the overall state of the nation.
