Like a river carving its way through rocks before flowing freely, the removal of the subsidy provides us, Nigerians, with an opportunity to reinvent ourselves, foster creativity, reduce waste, and most importantly, hold the government accountable for their use of the newfound wealth.

The benefits of this money are not limited to the Federal Government alone. The States will also be significant beneficiaries of this oil windfall, giving them greater capacity to address the needs of the grassroots. As a result, the States may have an even more substantial role to play than the FG in meeting the requirements of the local population.

Yesterday, in an apparent attempt to make political statements and gain favor with the public, Governor Obaseki of Edo State criticized the Federal Government. He accused the FG of implementing a fraudulent  palliative scheme in response to the fuel subsidy removal.

He appealed to the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to decline the palliative provided by the Federal Government. Instead, he suggested that the funds should be directed towards local governments, which are closer to the people and can more effectively address their needs

He made this regrettable statement with the intent to provoke the public against Tinubu and his administration during the peaceful protest by the NLC at the Government House in Benin City.

It is puzzling how Obaseki can engage in such incitement, especially when not too long ago, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Buhari administration provided palliatives for Edo State.

Instead of distributing these essential items to the citizens in need, Obaseki’s government chose to withhold them, keeping them locked away in warehouses.

This deceitful act came to light months after the COVID-19 lockdown had ended, exposing the state government’s fraudulent actions in hiding food materials intended for its own people.

During his speech, Obaseki suggested that if the Federal Government truly intends to assist, they should direct the palliatives to Local Governments, allowing them to distribute them among their respective communities.

However, this proposal raises a critical question: Has Obaseki effectively managed a local government during his tenure as governor?

For over three years, Obaseki has failed to conduct local government elections, which has led to concerns about the transparency and accountability of his administration.

It appears that he has delayed holding elections until the final moments of his term, sparking skepticism among the public about his motives. Such actions cast doubt on his ability to lead and oversee local governance effectively.

Obaseki, who presided over the House of Assembly without a majority sworn in for four years, now preaches about openness. Edo State, on the other hand, is confronting serious issues, such as large debts and a dysfunctional educational system.

Despite the claims of “Edo Best” on the internet, schools lack teachers, casting doubt on the effectiveness of the state’s education initiatives.

Obaseki’s actions have earned him the label of a “Hypocritical Shouter.” He has a reputation for obtaining loans without the majority’s approval in the House of Assembly, yet he criticizes the Federal Government for alleged fraudulent palliatives.

Obaseki has announced his plan to distribute 500m to the poorest of the poor in the state. However, there are valid concerns about the feasibility of this initiative.

If the Federal Government has faced challenges in reaching out to the most vulnerable citizens, how does Obaseki intend to effectively reach and assist them within the state?

Where would Obaseki obtain the monthly 500 million he plans to distribute if not from the savings generated by the fuel subsidy removal?

Obaseki can be described as a “Blustering Hypocrite” – someone who loudly criticizes others while being guilty of the same or even worse behavior themselves. Such individuals often fail to see the noble intentions of others and focus solely on finding faults.

Had it not been for the NLC protest at the government house, has the Governor addressed the plans he has for his citizens to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal?

My fellow citizens, considering that Obaseki’s revenue allocation has significantly increased from a single dollar to hundreds, what concrete plans does he have in place for the welfare of Edo citizens?

A governor who concealed essential items like indomie and salt from his citizens is now accusing Tinubu’s palliative measures of being fraudulent. Since the fuel subsidy removal, Tinubu has been engaging in frequent meetings with stakeholders.

In contrast, how many meetings have we observed Obaseki holding with stakeholders from his own state?

A governor who has governed for more than three years without Local Government representation is now requesting the President to allocate funds directly to the Local Government Areas, giving him the opportunity to control the money and disburse it according to his own discretion.

Nigeria is akin to a flower enduring the rain before the fruit ripens, moving towards sustainable progress under Tinubu’s politics, which prioritizes combating corruption from the outset. Like a diamond formed through the crucible of sacrifice, the nation is poised to grow and flourish.

The subsidy is a fraudulent practice that requires immediate attention and resolution. Nigerians are now looking for ways to move forward and alleviate the present hardships. It is in facing these challenges that the path to triumph is found.

We must “Embrace the struggle, for victory lies beyond.”
