In a video shared on his Instagram page on February 10, 2026, Afolayan responded to early reactions that followed the release of the new season. He noted that he does not expect everyone to understand or connect with his filmmaking style.
According to him, his projects are crafted for viewers who enjoy layered narratives that demand patience and careful attention.
The award-winning director, known for films such as Irapada and The Figurine, pointed out that those works were also met with criticism when they first premiered. Over time, however, they gained wider acceptance beyond Nigeria and received international recognition. He believes Anikulapo Season 2 could follow a similar trajectory.
Afolayan likened the reception of his series to global shows like Game of Thrones, where audiences often need multiple episodes to fully grasp the storyline. He explained that the new season introduces additional characters and plot developments that may require time for viewers to fully understand.
He added that scholars and lovers of serious cinema have commended the project, even if it may not appeal to everyone. While acknowledging that some viewers may not relate to the story, he expressed gratitude to those who appreciate his creative approach.
“I don’t make films to satisfy everyone. I create for people who are willing to think deeply and stay with the story,” he said. “From Irapada to The Figurine, I’ve faced criticism before, but with time, people came to understand the vision.
“You can’t judge a layered story after just one episode. Some stories require patience. This season introduces new characters and fresh directions, and it takes time to see how everything unfolds. I appreciate those who understand my style of storytelling. Not everyone will connect with it, and that’s perfectly fine.”
