The volatile political landscape of Edo State took an unexpected turn when a photograph featuring its three major political figures—Governor Obaseki, his deputy, Philip Shaibu, and former governor, Adams Oshiomhole—gathered together in what seems to be a reconciliatory meet-up. The image has since gone viral, igniting a maelstrom of reactions online. CONTINUE READING
These “three political gods,” as often referred to by their supporters and critics alike, have been staunch adversaries, especially during the run-up to the Edo elections which witnessed Obaseki securing his second term in office. The enmity that unfolded during this period was not just palpable, but evidently played out in the public eye, leaving no room for ambiguity regarding their rivalries.
The political drama primarily revolved around Oshiomhole, the ex-governor of Edo State and now a senator representing Edo North. Betrayal is an understatement when describing his relationship with Philip Shaibu, his once-trusted protégé. Shaibu, pivoting in his allegiance, allied himself with Obaseki, thereby alienating Oshiomhole from the core political machinery of Edo. The plot further thickened when Shaibu was seen associating with Oshiomhole in trending videos, a move that did not sit well with Obaseki. Surprisingly, even Obaseki himself was seen with his one-time adversary at a recent event.
The unexpected twist, however, is the recent photograph that captured the trio in a church in Agenebode, a village situated in the eastern part of Etsako. The apparent camaraderie displayed in the image begs the question: Is reconciliation on the horizon for these political juggernauts?
Netizens were quick to jump on this development. While many expressed their astonishment, others voiced their cynicism, questioning the authenticity and longevity of this newfound unity. A prevalent sentiment echoed across social media platforms is that of disdain for those who are pawns in the political game, with one user stating, “I pity those fighting for politicians.”
Regardless of individual opinions, one thing remains clear: politics, with its unpredictable nature, continues to surprise and captivate its audience. Only time will tell whether this momentary truce will pave the way for lasting peace or serve as a mere interlude in an ongoing political drama.
