The motion, raised by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and co-sponsored by South-East minority caucus members, aimed to recognize Nwosu’s role in defending the integrity of the 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most credible polls. However, during Wednesday’s Senate session, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin noted the controversy surrounding Nwosu’s legacy, leading to the motion’s rejection by voice vote. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Umeh condemned the decision as undemocratic and unfair to a man who significantly shaped Nigeria’s electoral process. He criticized the Senate for dismissing the motion without allowing proper debate, especially with Nwosu’s burial just days away. Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, as the former Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission, oversaw the annulled June 12, 1993, election that declared MKO Abiola the winner. Umeh insisted that rejecting the motion disregarded Nwosu’s vital contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
