I Was Ashamed” – Bisola Aiyeola Opens Up On Having A Child Out Of Wedlock

In an interview with Tope Olowoni, the mother of one revealed that she was initially devastated upon learning she was pregnant out of wedlock, especially because her own mother also raised her as a single parent.

Aiyeola said she felt a deep sense of shame and fear that single motherhood might become a recurring pattern in her family, potentially affecting her daughter as well.

She explained:

“I was scared and ashamed of being pregnant and having a baby out of wedlock. I thought I was going to get married because I was engaged at that time, but we never got married.

“So it was very shameful because my mum was a single mum and I was about to become one. I feared my child might also experience the same fate.”

The actress also noted that her family’s financial situation at the time made the experience even more overwhelming. She added that she initially struggled to accept motherhood, even finding it difficult to breastfeed her newborn because of the emotional shock.

Now 40, Aiyeola said that with time, she came to accept her situation and grew to deeply cherish her daughter regardless of the circumstances of her birth.

She added that, looking back, she is grateful for her daughter and the life lessons the experience has taught her.
