Nigerian singer Ahmed Ololade, popularly known as Asake, has described the year 2020 as a defining period in his life that challenged him and ultimately changed his career direction.
He recalled that what felt like setbacks at the time later became the foundation for his breakthrough in the music industry. Speaking in an interview with Korty EO, the Sungba crooner said the experience taught him humility, patience, and resilience while navigating life’s uncertainties.
According to him, 2020 marked the beginning of his rise in music, as he released a song that opened doors for his career after a period of struggle.
He noted that his journey demonstrated how perseverance through difficult times can eventually lead to unexpected opportunities and success.
Asake also revealed plans to expand his career internationally, saying he had long dreamed of exploring opportunities in Los Angeles and the global music scene.
He added that once he arrived in California, he fully embraced the experience, focusing on his craft and working towards achieving his ambitions.
He said:
“2020 was a serious year. Life humbled me so much. You know when God puts something sweet in your mouth and removes it? That was what happened in 2020.
“At that time, I did not know that God was building me. I did not expect it. God then gave me ‘Me I no dey cap, me I no dey form,’ and then He did not give me again.
“Before I travelled, Los Angeles was a place I liked. Even when I was with my friends, I told them that I was going to leave this country and go to California. So I did not overthink it. When I got to California, I was just like, bro, I will be here. Let me just live my dream, mehn.”
