George Ilenikhena is eager to make his debut for the Super Eagles after receiving his first invitation to the Nigeria senior national team ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

The 20-year-old Al-Ittihad striker received his maiden call-up from head coach Éric Chelle as Nigeria prepare to begin their qualifying campaign against Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday.

Speaking during a media session in Uyo, Ilenikhena described his invitation as a major honour and expressed his excitement at joining the three-time African champions.

“It is an honour to be here. I am proud and happy to be part of this big national team, and for me, it’s a big deal,” he said.

The young forward acknowledged the quality and experience within the squad, noting that he is surrounded by players who have already established themselves at the international level.

“I am just 20 years old, and I am here with big and already accomplished players,” Ilenikhena added.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Ilenikhena joined the Super Eagles camp on Tuesday and said he was impressed by the unity and atmosphere within the team. He revealed that he had quickly settled in with his new teammates, describing the squad as a close-knit group.

“The team spirit is very good. I just arrived yesterday (Tuesday), and I can see that everyone is together like a big family, and that’s very good,” he said.

With the opening AFCON qualifier against Madagascar approaching, Ilenikhena is hoping to make his first appearance for Nigeria and contribute to the team’s campaign if given the opportunity by Chelle.

The striker said he is prepared to give his best whenever he is called upon, while expressing confidence in the team’s preparations ahead of Friday’s encounter.

“I am very excited. I will give my best, like always. I will give my best when the coach puts me on the pitch and help the team in the best way I can,” he said.

Ilenikhena added that the Super Eagles are determined to begin their qualifying campaign on a positive note, stressing that the squad is fully focused on securing a strong result against Madagascar.

“We are ready and excited to play this first game, and we are preparing in the best way to win on Friday,” he stated.
