The Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Nura Abdullahi, has regained his freedom after spending 61 days in captivity following his abduction by armed bandits.

Abdullahi was reportedly released alongside other victims who were abducted during the attack on his residence in Bungudu town on July 25, 2026.

According to Bush Radio Academy, a family source confirmed that the council chairman and the other victims regained their freedom on Wednesday, September 24, after more than two months in captivity. The circumstances surrounding their release have not been made public.

The Zamfara State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement confirming the development at the time of the report.

Abdullahi was abducted after armed men attacked his residence in Bungudu town in the early hours of July 25. The attackers reportedly overpowered the security personnel attached to him before taking the council chairman away.

Troops from Operation FANSAN YAMMA responded after hearing gunshots and engaged the attackers, eventually rescuing members of Abdullahi’s family who had also been taken during the incident. The rescued family members included his wife, mother and two children.

Two other residents, Halliru Soja, a staff member of the Federal Medical Centre in Gusau, and Hussaini Naira, a Point-of-Sale operator, were also abducted during the attack.

The incident resulted in the deaths of four security personnel attached to the council chairman, according to reports at the time. Abdullahi’s elder brother, Bello Abdullahi, who sustained gunshot injuries during the attack, later died from his injuries on August 4.

Following the abduction, security agencies launched search-and-rescue operations aimed at locating and securing the safe release of the victims.

The latest development has brought an end to Abdullahi’s 61-day ordeal in captivity, although details about how the victims were released remain undisclosed.
