The ongoing tribal sentiments emanating from the South-East, particularly concerning the 2023 elections and subsequent general election results where Tinubu emerged victorious, have been a recurrent topic. The smallest population-wise among the regions, the South-East has stirred controversy with claims of ownership and development of Lagos, resulting in the endorsement of Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour as the next Governor of Lagos State. This sentiment led to incidents of physical altercations on election day, and voters who had supported Peter Obi in the presidential election turned to APC’s Sanwo-Olu for his re-election.

Segun Sowunmi sheds light on the deepening tribal crisis in Nigeria while speaking to Seun Okin on the Mic On Podcast, emphasizing the divisive tactics employed in different regions of the country, stating: “Have you gone through Twitter of late? I look at Twitter and I see how the young people of the tribes are at each other necks and I ask myself, is there anybody in charge of this country? If they were in charge of this you be wondering what the Minister of Information is doing, what the guy in charge of the National Orientation, what the guys of the National Securities are doing. Do you know how long it takes before you start to have this xenophobic attack on people? All that needs to happen is for you to regularize tribes attacking themselves, Awolowo did this, Obafemi did that, your parents n*ked, and our parents are this.”

He continued: “How can leaders of societies be laying claims to things that will be offensive to other people’s home states? tribes are controlling the directive principles of their politics, the Igbos control the directive principles of their Southeast politics, and The Hausa and Fulani control the directive principles of the Northern politics, why will anybody with all due respect begin to disrespect the Yorubas and expect that the Yorubas don’t have a right to control the directive principles of their own region, of their own space, and when people are operating in that space but the reality you must be sensitive to the tribal conclave of people. I won’t come into the southeast and start to speak to them in a manner that especially when I am residing there that’s not it and it is going at a speed that it is getting too dangerous.”

The PDP Chieftain concluded; “Bola Tinubu’s profile, actions, cabinet tells you that this is not what the Yorubas want. Address will say he is running the government for himself, his cronies and then his family members, which leader in Yoruba land can tell you that I nominated somebody into bola Tinubu cabinet, so why will you know say because a Yoruba man is president, some of us campaigned vigorously to tell you lets look another way then you are going to say because of that one man you are going to cause a crisis between the tribe and you are the ones fighting the Hausa’s when you are not fighting the Hausa, you are fighting the Yorubas.”
