IGP Egbetokun Warns Fubara Against Inciting Violence And Destruction During Rivers LG PollNigeria’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a firm warning to Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, cautioning him against making unfounded allegations and threatening violence in connection to the upcoming local government elections.

Naija News reports that the warning follows Governor Fubara’s public statement, where he claimed he would hold IGP Egbetokun accountable if there were any disruptions to law and order in the state. This statement came after Fubara allegedly intervened at the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) office, preventing police officers from removing election materials ahead of the polls. The incident has heightened political tension in the state.

Reacting to the development, IGP Egbetokun, through a statement by Police Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, expressed surprise at the governor’s actions. The statement condemned the governor’s threats and urged caution in the pursuit of political goals.

“The Nigeria Police takes exception to the unwarranted outburst of the Governor and the false accusations he levied against the Inspector-General of Police and the entire Nigeria Police Force. We advise caution and decency in the pursuit of individual political objectives,” the statement read.

“Threatening to shed blood and burn down the state over a local government election is unacceptable to us. The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to protecting lives and property and will work with other security agencies in Rivers State to prevent any breakdown of law and order.”

The IGP also announced increased security deployments across Rivers State to maintain peace during the election period, encouraging residents to continue their daily activities without fear.
