The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has strongly refuted allegations made by Omoyele Sowore, claiming that the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is illegal.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement released on Thursday, the Force Spokesperson, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, dismissed the claims as baseless and misleading, asserting that they are aimed at undermining the legitimacy of the IGP’s appointment and eroding public confidence in the police leadership.

Adejobi clarified: “The appointment of IGP Egbetokun is firmly grounded in law, specifically PART III, Section 7 (6) of the Police Act, 2020 (as amended), which states that ‘The person appointed to the office of the Inspector-General of Police shall hold office for four years.’”

He further explained that the appointment was ratified by the Police Council and confirmed by the Presidency, setting Egbetokun’s tenure from October 31, 2023, to October 31, 2027. This timeline aligns with recent amendments to the Police Act, which ensure stability in police leadership and facilitate the implementation of long-term strategies for maintaining law and order.

Adejobi emphasized that IGP Egbetokun’s position as the 22nd Indigenous Inspector-General of Police is both legally and procedurally sound. He warned that Sowore’s allegations are attempts to create confusion and diminish trust in the police force’s leadership.

He stated, “Disseminating inaccurate information about the IGP’s standing risks compromising national security and undermining collective efforts to ensure peace and order. We urge the public to avoid spreading such unfounded narratives and instead engage in objective discussions that promote the safety and security of lives and property.”

The police also cautioned individuals and groups against perpetuating disinformation that could destabilize the country’s security framework, reiterating their commitment to maintaining public safety and order.
