Speaking with deep emotion, the ex-Inter Milan star condemned both the Lagos State government and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), accusing them of abandoning Rufai’s family in their time of need.

Taribo compared Rufai’s plight to that of other late Super Eagles greats such as Stephen Keshi, Thompson Oleha, and Rasheed Yekini, all of whom he said were equally neglected after their passing.

According to him, the situation left him so heartbroken that he developed goosebumps and shed tears — something he admitted he did not even do when his own parents died.

In his words:

“With this kind of example, I will never advise even my son to play for this country. Do we really have a football federation or even an association in Lagos State? That a hero, a soldier, a football evangelist like Rufai could be treated this way — and his family abandoned?”

He further lamented that Rufai’s family had to beg within their circle just to raise money for funeral expenses, describing it as “madness.”
