IMF Head Backs Tinubu’s Economic Reforms, Commends Bold Policy ChangesKristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has expressed strong support for Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu. Following a meeting with Tinubu at the G20 Summit in Brazil, Georgieva praised the president’s efforts to drive economic transformation and create jobs for Nigeria’s growing population.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Georgieva wrote:
“Excellent meeting with President @officialABAT at the #G20 Summit.
Commended Nigeria’s decisive actions to reform the economy, accelerate growth, and generate jobs for its vibrant population.
The IMF strongly supports Nigeria on this journey.”
Under Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria has implemented several significant reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy, the liberalization of the foreign exchange market, and the deregulation of the petroleum downstream sector. These measures are designed to stabilize the economy, restore investor confidence, and attract investment in key sectors.
The IMF reiterated its backing for these reforms on October 25, during a press briefing in Washington, D.C., recognizing their potential to reshape Nigeria’s economic trajectory.
Earlier, on June 12, during Nigeria’s 25th Democracy Anniversary, Tinubu acknowledged the country’s economic instability and the urgent need for comprehensive reforms. Despite the challenges, his administration remains dedicated to addressing these issues and fostering long-term stability.
The World Bank also showed cautious optimism about the reforms in its Nigeria Development Update (NDU) report released on October 17. The report highlighted positive outcomes from the changes but stressed that maintaining the reforms is critical, as reversing them could have severe repercussions for the country’s economy.
While international bodies like the IMF and World Bank have praised the reforms, many Nigerians are still grappling with the economic hardships resulting from these changes, underscoring the importance of careful implementation and sustained progress.
