Immigrants Take Note Canada Highlights Two Sk!lls That Could Unlock Better Jobs

The Canadian government has highlighted English and French language proficiency as two important skills that can help immigrants improve their employment prospects and settle more successfully in the country.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has continued to stress the importance of developing strong communication skills in Canada’s two official languages, particularly for newcomers seeking employment and adapting to life in the country.

According to IRCC, proficiency in English can help immigrants communicate effectively, access essential services and compete for employment opportunities, especially in provinces and territories where English is the dominant language.

French proficiency, meanwhile, can open additional opportunities for newcomers, particularly those living in Quebec and French-speaking communities across other parts of Canada. The department also notes that being able to communicate in both English and French can provide an advantage when seeking employment and participating in Canadian society.

The Canadian authorities advise newcomers who already speak one of the official languages to consider learning the other as a way of expanding their employment and social opportunities.

IRCC also provides access to government-funded language programmes, including Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) and Cours de langue pour les immigrants au Canada (CLIC), for eligible permanent residents and protected persons.

In addition, some programmes combine language instruction with workplace experience, allowing newcomers to improve their communication skills while becoming familiar with the Canadian work environment.

The government notes that strong English or French skills can be particularly important in regulated professions, where workers may need to demonstrate their ability to understand work-related terminology and communicate effectively in their chosen field.

Canada also offers settlement services that assist eligible newcomers with language assessments, job searches, job-related language training and other aspects of integration into Canadian society.
