The Director of Public Enlightenment at the Kano State Ministry of Education, Balarabe Kiru, communicated the postponement in a statement on Saturday. Kiru mentioned that the Commissioner for Education, Umar Doguwa, will soon provide a revised resumption date.

Kiru said, “I wish to inform pupils, students, and parents that the previously scheduled resumption dates of September 8 and 9, 2024, have been postponed. This decision is based on urgent reasons aimed at improving the learning environment. A new resumption date will be announced in due course.”

In related news, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized the Edo State Government’s decision to indefinitely postpone the resumption of schools due to the fuel price increase.

According to Naija News, Ojo Akin-Longe, the Permanent Secretary in the Edo State Ministry of Education, issued a memo announcing the postponement of the September 9 resumption date until further notice.

The APC’s Publicity Secretary, Peter Uwadiae-Enosorogbe, condemned the move as “expensive political gimmickry.” He argued that sacrificing educational progress for political reasons is unacceptable.

Uwadiae-Enosorogbe stated, “You cannot sacrifice the education of children for fuel scarcity. Fuel prices have fluctuated before, and it should not disrupt the educational system. No one is protesting the fuel hike, and no parents have reported being unable to send their children to school. This decision does not serve the interests of the children, parents, or the educational system.”

He called for the reversal of the decision, noting that under the current administration, Edo State’s performance in the recently released West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results has declined, with the state ranking 26th compared to top positions in the past.
