In his Independence Day message on Tuesday, he stated, “Today, we celebrate a significant milestone in our nation’s history—64 years of independence. We honor the nationalists who fought tirelessly to end colonial rule. Since 1960, we have made considerable strides and faced numerous challenges on our journey as a nation.

“Over the years, we have witnessed steady progress in our aspirations and shared dreams. We have enjoyed 25 years of sustained democracy in this Fourth Republic, following the end of military rule in 1999. Our economy has seen tangible growth, and we have maintained our unity, upholding the social fabric of our country.”

Jonathan emphasized that to unlock Nigeria’s full potential, it is crucial to strengthen institutions and ensure peaceful, free, fair, and transparent elections. He urged Nigerians to embrace the values of justice, equity, and inclusion while calling on leaders to leverage the nation’s diversity and harness the potential of its youth.

“However, we still confront significant challenges that test our resilience and determination, particularly regarding security, economic development, national cohesion, and infrastructure improvement. To deepen our democracy and foster inclusive economic growth, we must strengthen our institutions and cultivate a democratic culture that promotes peaceful and transparent elections. This foundation is essential for good governance, sustainable democracy, national unity, and peaceful coexistence.

“As a nation, we must recommit ourselves to the principles of justice, equity, and inclusion. We should harness our diversity, tap into the potential of our youth, and utilize our natural resources for the benefit of all.

“As we celebrate this important day, I encourage all Nigerians to remain optimistic and committed to our nation’s greatness, regardless of the challenges we face. With a shared purpose, enthusiasm, and love for one another, we can overcome obstacles and build a prosperous nation where every citizen has equal opportunities to thrive,” concluded Former President Jonathan.
