According to INEC, the Edo State governorship election is set to take place on September 21, 2024, while the Ondo State governorship election is scheduled for November 16, 2024.

This declaration aligns with the provisions of Section 178 (2) of the Nigerian Constitution (as amended), which mandates that elections for these positions should occur no earlier than 150 days and no later than 30 days before the expiration of the current officeholder’s tenure.

The National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, made this announcement during a press briefing in Abuja.

He noted that the tenures of the current governors of Edo and Ondo States are set to conclude on November 11, 2024, and February 23, 2025, respectively.

As per Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, INEC is required to publish the Notice for the Election no later than 360 days before the election date. Therefore, the Edo State Governorship election is officially scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024.
