In a statement released on Wednesday, INEC categorically denied online reports claiming it had approved the registration of two political parties — the Independent Democrats and the Peoples Democratic Movement — calling such claims false and urging the public to disregard them.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the commission has not registered any new party. The number of registered political parties in Nigeria remains 19,” INEC stated via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

The commission explained that the two groups referenced were initially registered in August 2013 but were among the 72 parties deregistered in February 2020, in accordance with Section 225A of the 1999 Constitution.

‘No Registration by Blackmail’ — INEC Warns

Amid growing pressure from political figures and interest groups pushing for party registration, INEC reiterated that the process is legal and not subject to political influence or intimidation.

“Rather than trying to blackmail INEC with unfounded accusations, groups applying for registration should submit authentic, verifiable documents and comply fully with all requirements,” said Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

Speaking to The PUNCH, Oyekanmi stressed that the commission values the quality of applications over quantity, and only those that meet constitutional criteria will be approved.

“The volume of applications is less important than how many meet the necessary conditions for registration,” he added.

INEC’s stance follows accusations from political stakeholders that it is deliberately delaying or obstructing the formation of new parties.

Critics Speak Out

Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, voiced criticism of INEC’s leadership, suggesting the current chairman would have blocked the APC’s registration in 2013 had he been in charge at the time.

Musician and activist Seun Kuti, leader of the Movement of the People (a party inspired by his father Fela Kuti’s political ideals), also condemned the commission’s conduct.

“Since 2018, no new political party has been registered, while 72 others were deregistered. This restricts political choice and undermines democracy,” Kuti said.

Other prominent voices, including former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal and APC chieftain Salihu Lukman, have also raised concerns over the commission’s posture.

INEC Lists Conditions for Party Registration

Oyekanmi outlined the rigorous requirements under the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties. These include:

  • A formal letter of intent submitted at least 12 months before a general election

  • Payment of an administrative fee

  • Online submission of relevant documents via an INEC-issued access code

  • Submission of the party’s constitution, manifesto, and member register

  • Proof of a functioning national headquarters in Abuja

  • Affidavit affirming the authenticity of submitted documents

  • Evidence that the party’s National Executive Committee reflects federal character (members from at least 24 states and the FCT)
