Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday during a press briefing about the upcoming 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL), scheduled for July 6, Oluyede emphasized that the Army remains committed to its constitutional duties.
He described NADCEL as a moment to honor both past and present service members for their sacrifices. The annual event also marks the establishment of the Nigerian Army and commemorates the first shot fired during the Nigerian Civil War in Garkem, now part of Cross River State. The tradition began in 1978.
“The Nigerian Army will not relent in its efforts to secure the lives of Nigerians and protect the survival of our democracy,” Oluyede stated.
Highlighting this year’s theme, “Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army’s Transformation Drive,” the COAS explained that the strategy focuses on prioritizing the welfare and professional growth of personnel to drive military reform.
He noted that the Army has made significant progress in areas such as innovation, research and development, civil-military relations, and technological upgrades—all aimed at better equipping soldiers to meet their duties.
Oluyede also warned that terrorist groups will not be allowed to fracture the country’s unity.
“The Nigerian Army has continually stood firm against terrorists and criminal elements, preventing them from destroying our national identity or violating our sovereignty,” he said.
The 2025 NADCEL celebration features various activities designed to strengthen civil-military relations and recognize the efforts of soldiers:
-
Friday, July 4: Commissioning of civil-military projects across Kaduna State, a golf tournament, free medical outreach, and a charity initiative by the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association (NAOWA).
-
Public speaking sessions at secondary schools nationwide.
-
Saturday, July 5: A public lecture at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, followed by an awards ceremony for the COAS Annual Literary Competition and a Gala Night at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua Conference Centre.
-
Sunday, July 6: The grand finale featuring a military parade, equipment exhibition, and the presentation of COAS Commendation Awards to outstanding personnel.
Oluyede concluded by affirming that NADCEL reflects the Army’s dedication to professionalism, unity, and national development.
