The attack, which occurred around 10:46 p.m. on July 2, claimed the life of a female relative and left a police officer attached to the former minister seriously wounded.
According to counterinsurgency expert Zagazola Makama, the assailants stormed the compound and opened fire indiscriminately. During the invasion, Inspector Walba Go Tom, a Special Protection Unit officer from Base 4, Makurdi, was shot and had his service rifle, an assault weapon with a breach number, stolen by the attackers.
Tragically, a female member of Sango’s family was also struck by bullets and later succumbed to her injuries at the Plateau Specialists Hospital in Jos. The injured officer is reportedly receiving medical care and is responding to treatment.
Community members said the gunmen escaped the scene before reinforcements could arrive.
Damishi Sango, who served as Nigeria’s Minister of Sports between 1999 and 2001 during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, is the latest high-profile figure affected by the persistent wave of violence plaguing Plateau State, a region long troubled by deadly clashes and attacks involving armed groups and suspected herdsmen.
