The governors, convening under the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF), held a two-day strategic meeting in Lagos to discuss pressing national issues. The session, hosted by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, took place at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island.

Led by the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, the Forum issued a communiqué reaffirming its confidence in Nigeria’s future as a united, peaceful, and prosperous nation. During the meeting, members reviewed the country’s security landscape and commended President Tinubu for enhancing coordination among federal, state, and local security agencies, as well as recognizing the dedication and sacrifices of security personnel and community volunteers.

The APC governors lauded the President’s approach to national security, describing the re-engineering of the security system as timely and necessary. Gov. Uzodimma, reading the communiqué, stated that the PGF resolved to support these efforts by strengthening community-based security initiatives, intelligence gathering, conflict-prevention measures, and assistance for victims of violence and disasters.

The communiqué read in part:
“The Forum reviewed the security situation across the country and expressed appreciation for improved coordination among federal, state, and local security structures, as well as the courage and sacrifices of security agencies and community volunteers. We resolved to strengthen local security architecture in all member states. The Forum commended Mr. President for ongoing re-engineering in the national security architecture. Governors reiterated that safeguarding lives and property is a non-negotiable responsibility of government. We resolved to continue strengthening community-based security initiatives, intelligence gathering, conflict-prevention mechanisms, and support for victims of violence and disaster.”

The PGF also assessed the political, economic, and social environment, emphasizing that reforms must prioritize improving citizens’ lives, protecting their dignity, and expanding opportunities. The governors praised the President’s commitment to economic stability and sustainable growth under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Uzodimma highlighted the temporary challenges posed by macroeconomic reforms and acknowledged Nigerians’ resilience amid rising living costs. The Forum committed to intensifying state-level interventions in food production and distribution, support for SMEs, youth employment, social protection for vulnerable groups, and targeted relief for low-income households and workers.

“The Progressive Governors are determined to work closely with federal institutions and local governments to ensure sustained progress, inclusivity, and visible improvements in citizens’ quality of life,” Uzodimma said.

The Forum also emphasized the critical role of infrastructure, urban renewal, and rural development in boosting productivity, attracting investment, and enhancing living standards. The governors specifically commended Lagos State for its pioneering efforts in transport reforms, urban regeneration, and innovative financing, agreeing to foster peer-learning and collaboration across states.

The PGF pledged to scale up investments in roads, housing, public transport, water and sanitation, digital connectivity, and climate-resilient infrastructure, ensuring inclusivity for all communities. Uzodimma further emphasized that effective local governance is central to implementing the Renewed Hope Agenda at the grassroots. Governors committed to enhancing transparency, accountability, and service delivery in local government administration, engaging citizens through town halls, consultations with traditional and religious leaders, civil society, labor, professional bodies, youth, and women’s groups.

The Forum reaffirmed its loyalty to the APC, praising the party’s efforts to strengthen internal democracy, discipline, reconciliation, and inclusiveness. Governors pledged to play a stabilizing role within the party while ensuring it remains focused on delivering on its mandate.

“The Forum reiterates its full support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the policies of APC governments at all levels. Progressive Governors see themselves as trustees of the people’s mandate and as a collective leadership responsible for translating Nigerians’ aspirations into tangible social and economic outcomes nationwide,” the communiqué stated.

Finally, the Forum underscored the importance of social cohesion, interfaith harmony, and inter-ethnic understanding, urging leaders to promote unity, moderation, and respect while rejecting criminality and hate speech in all forms.
