Inspector General Dismisses Court Fainting Incidents As Attention-Seeking BehaviorInspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has asserted that the fainting of six suspects in court prior to their arraignment was a calculated act intended to draw negative media attention. He emphasized that medical assistance was quickly provided, reaffirming the police’s commitment to the welfare of those in their custody.

On Friday, 76 suspects, primarily minors showing signs of malnourishment, were arraigned in connection with the #EndBadGovernance protests. During the proceedings, six of the suspects collapsed and had to be rushed from the courtroom. Following their arraignment, the court granted each minor bail set at N10 million, provoking criticism both nationally and internationally.

In a statement issued on November 1, which was later shared with reporters, Egbetokun highlighted that under Nigerian law, individuals who have reached the age of criminal responsibility are accountable for their actions, regardless of their age. He noted, “The incident in court, where six suspects fainted, was a deliberate attempt to attract media attention.”

Egbetokun further stated, “While we are committed to upholding justice, the Nigeria Police Force remains sensitive to the rights of all individuals, including minors. Serious offences do not exempt individuals from legal consequences, as practiced globally.” He pointed out that the charges against the suspects included serious allegations such as terrorism, arson, and threats to national security.

The IGP reassured the public of the police’s transparency in handling the case, urging citizens to remain unbiased as the legal process unfolds. “The NPF is dedicated to professionalism and transparency in this matter, upholding both the rule of law and respect for human dignity,” he concluded.
