Details of the operation were disclosed in a press release on Tuesday by Captain Olubodunde Oni, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations. The arrests occurred on September 29, 2024, at the residence of Tukura Abdul-Kareem, suspected of leading Boko Haram in the Sunkani Ward of Ardo-Kola Local Government Area.
Captain Oni reported that Abdul-Kareem and eight associates were detained during the operation. The suspects, who had traveled from various parts of Nigeria to join Boko Haram, acknowledged their affiliation with the group. Investigations revealed that the group intended to establish a hidden cell in Taraba to execute attacks using Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) against civilians and key infrastructure.
Abdul-Kareem also confessed to collaborating with his brother, Adamu Abdul-Kareem, who remains at large. Items confiscated from the suspects included nine mobile phones, identity documents, and illegal substances, such as marijuana and other narcotics.
In a separate operation on September 30, 2024, troops in Chachanji village of Takum Local Government Area arrested two women, Patience Avadoo Tersoo and Joy Nguemo Emmanuel. They were believed to be the spouse and sibling of a notorious kidnapper named Anyogo, suspected of providing essential information to his criminal network. During the raid, soldiers seized a smartphone, a motorcycle, and a calabash.
Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, leader of the 6 Brigade, commended the soldiers for their dedication and prompt response, highlighting that their actions disrupted a terror plot and safeguarded the community. He also thanked the Taraba community for their invaluable support and urged continued collaboration to maintain peace and security.
“Together, we will ensure a safer and more secure Taraba and Nigeria as a whole,” Uwa stated.
