In a Facebook interview with media personality Lucky Udu and in a discussion with Godfrey George for Punch, Obukoko recounted her realization at age 15 when she discovered she could urinate standing up. She experienced significant embarrassment when her classmates saw her urinating while standing, which led to further confusion and public scrutiny.
As a result, Obukoko began taking precautions to avoid similar situations, such as dressing in loose clothing and seeking hidden places to relieve herself. Her condition affected her romantic relationships, leading to difficulties with both men and women. She experienced blackmail from a man who threatened to expose her private photos unless she paid him.
Obukoko eventually began a relationship with a woman and fathered a son. However, the relationship ended when the woman was uncomfortable with her being an intersex parent. Obukoko has visitation rights and sees her son every three months. She later had another child, a baby girl, with a different partner. Concerns have arisen that the baby girl may also be intersex, prompting fears about her future and considerations for surgery.
Despite these challenges, Obukoko’s older child refers to her as “Mummy.
