The Kano State Police Command has initiated a thorough investigation into a troubling incident involving the decapitation of six-year-old Mohammed Saidu. Allegedly, a 16-year-old Almajiri named Abdullahi, identified as the perpetrator, was lynched by a mob in Kanwa village, Madobi local government area of the state. CP Usaini Gumel, the State’s Commissioner of Police, informed the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Abdullahi, originally from Zamfara State, was apprehended in possession of a blood-stained knife believed to be the murder weapon by a concerned citizen.

Abdullahi reportedly confessed to the crime upon police arrival, admitting to disposing of the victim’s head in a nearby pit toilet. The mob descended upon him, and though he was rescued and taken to Kwankwaso Cottage Hospital for treatment, he succumbed to his injuries. Abdullahi had migrated to the village in 2021 and returned recently, purportedly for condolences after the death of an elderly woman.

The Village Head, Umar Maitama Yusuf, confirmed the incident occurring on Thursday, April 11, 2024, around 9 am. Abdullahi had previously worked for the victim’s parents but was dismissed due to alleged theft. According to Yusuf, the suspect’s return to the village coincided with a tragic event, during which he lured the victim to a primary school toilet and committed the gruesome act.

The suspect was initially rescued by Yusuf and kept in his palace for police investigation, but the mob, numbering around 10,000 due to the festive season, overpowered law enforcement and vigilante groups. They vandalized parts of the palace in their attempt to reach Abdullahi, ultimately killing him within the palace premises.

The victim’s body was taken to a local cottage for confirmation of death and subsequent Islamic burial rites, while the suspect’s remains were placed in the Murtala Muhammed Hospital mortuary for further investigation.
