At the launch of the Peace Tale Competition Nigeria 2024 in Abuja on Monday, Ms. Uduak-Abasi Akpabio, convener of the IPGI Peace Art Competition, emphasized the crucial role children play in long-term peacebuilding in Nigeria.

Akpabio highlighted that children aged 8-10 can actively engage in discussions about peace and conflict. She stressed that for Nigeria to build a robust capacity for peace and conflict management, it must begin with educating children and young people early on.

She noted that while addressing the nation’s security challenges, initiating conversations about peace with children is essential. “We understand the importance of starting early to build capacity among our citizens for peace, effective conflict management, and good governance,” Akpabio said.

She explained that despite ongoing stabilization efforts in conflict-affected areas, building long-term peace and conflict management capacity must start with the youth. The IPGI’s Peace Art Competition, aimed at children aged 8-10, is one such initiative. “We know children can engage with peace and conflict issues. We need to use mediums that children understand, engage with, and enjoy.”

Akpabio also highlighted the importance of peace education and mentioned that IPGI has developed books for a peace education curriculum for children. She stated, “It’s important to reinforce every message and give children the opportunity to contemplate different concepts. This year, our theme is ‘unity in diversity.’”

Announcing the theme for the 2024 peace competition, “unity in diversity,” Akpabio said that participants will create drawings depicting this theme. This approach will help children aged 6-10 understand and engage with the concept of peace
