Emma Powerful, the spokesperson for IPOB, made these claims in response to what the organization perceives as arbitrary arrests and reported extrajudicial killings of Igbo individuals in the Southeastern region.

Between 2013 and 2023, it is alleged that over 20,000 Biafran activists, primarily from the Igbo ethnic group, have been either killed or declared missing after being apprehended by Nigerian security forces.

Powerful expressed concern that the Southeast has become the most heavily militarized area in the country.

In a statement issued by Powerful, it is stated: “The arbitrary arrest, detention, and extrajudicial killing of Biafrans, especially Igbo people, by the Nigeria Police, Military, and DSS, through legal means, are solely rooted in ethnic hatred.”

“Throughout history, both before and after the Biafra Civil War, the ethnic hostility against Biafrans has persisted. This is why IPOB, under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has embarked on the Biafra Self-Determination quest to liberate ourselves from the undeniable ethnic profiling and hatred.”

“It is no longer a secret that Biafra land, particularly the Southeast, has been heavily militarized by security personnel who allegedly harbor ethnic biases. Their agenda, according to IPOB, includes abducting Igbo individuals for possible execution, organ harvesting, or financial extortion.”

“The Southeast region is arguably the most militarized area in Nigeria, with a significant presence of security forces. In many instances, the Nigerian government is accused of supporting violent criminal elements in the region.”
