In a press statement released by the group’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, on Sunday, it was revealed that Kanu is facing medical complications while in solitary confinement under the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS). The statement suggests that internal bleeding, possibly resulting from torture and physical abuse inflicted by Nigerian secret agents during his abduction in Kenya in 2021, is a significant concern.

The statement reads in part, “The report reaching IPOB leadership indicates that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is having medical complications in the DSS solitary confinement. The report said that Kanu may be having internal bleeding caused by torture.”

IPOB asserts that the overuse and abuse of drugs by the DSS may also contribute to Kanu’s health problems, necessitating urgent medical attention outside the DSS facility. The group calls for the release of Kanu on medical grounds, urging both the Federal Government and the British Government to allow independent medical professionals to assess his condition and perform necessary surgery for his survival.

Furthermore, IPOB appeals to the international community to intervene and persuade President Bola Tinubu to release Kanu before the situation worsens. While emphasizing that they are not begging for Kanu’s release but aiming to prevent a potential calamity for Nigeria if Kanu dies in custody, the group calls on its members and various stakeholders, including Igbo politicians, religious leaders, women groups, and elders, to ensure Kanu’s immediate release for comprehensive medical examination and treatment.

The statement concludes with a warning to the Federal Government, cautioning against any harm befalling Kanu during or after his detention. IPOB asserts Kanu’s significance to the Biafran cause and the potential consequences if mishandled. The group urges the government to act promptly and release Kanu to address his medical emergency before it’s too late.
