A dissident rapper in Iran has received a death sentence for his alleged support of protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, who was arrested in 2022 for wearing a hijab considered ‘improper’. Toomaj Salehi, the rapper, has been held in custody for over eighteen months, as reported by CBS News.

According to the reformist Shargh newspaper, Toomaj Salehi was condemned to death for corruption on Earth by Branch 1 of Isfahan Revolutionary Court, as stated by his lawyer Amir Raisian.

The Iranian government has claimed to possess evidence linking the United States and other Western nations to the protests that erupted nationwide after Amini’s death.

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, was detained in September 2022 for violating hijab regulations. Tragically, she died three days after her arrest, sparking widespread and violent demonstrations across the country.

Salehi, 33, was arrested in October 2022 for publicly supporting the wave of protests triggered by Amini’s death while in custody.

The turmoil following Amini’s death in September 2022 led to hundreds of casualties, including dozens of security personnel, and the detention of thousands of individuals.

According to Raisian, the Revolutionary Court charged Salehi with “assistance in sedition, assembly and collusion, propaganda against the system, and inciting riots.”

The Supreme Court reviewed the case and instructed the lower court to address the flaws in the sentence, as confirmed by Raisian. However, in an unprecedented move, the court refused to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling, asserting its independence.
