Isak Double Fires Liverpool To First Premier League Win Under Iraola
Alexander Isak delivered a standout performance for Liverpool, scoring twice as the Reds secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over newly promoted Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
The Sweden international struck twice within the opening nine minutes, putting Liverpool firmly in control and helping Andoni Iraola record his first Premier League victory and clean sheet as the club’s manager.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Isak’s brace represented one of his most influential displays since joining Liverpool from Newcastle United for a reported British-record £125 million fee 12 months ago.
The result also marked Liverpool’s first league victory of the campaign after they struggled to find the breakthrough in their opening fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United. The three points moved the Reds up to fifth place in the early Premier League standings, while Ipswich dropped to 13th.
Liverpool needed just six minutes to open the scoring in Suffolk. Cody Gakpo picked out Isak with a precise pass, allowing the striker to fire past Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen at his near post.
Isak added his second goal only three minutes later after once again combining effectively with Gakpo. The assist was Gakpo’s third for Isak in the Premier League this season, highlighting the growing attacking understanding between the two players.
Ipswich came close to reducing the deficit before the half-hour mark, but Ronald Araujo made an important intervention on his full Liverpool debut to prevent Daizen Maeda from converting at the back post.
Isak appeared to have completed his hat-trick before the interval after turning home a low cross from Florian Wirtz, but the effort was ruled out for offside following the assistant referee’s decision.
Ipswich attempted to mount a comeback after the restart, but Liverpool remained largely comfortable at the back and successfully controlled the tempo of the contest.
Despite making major additions to their squad during the transfer window, the hosts struggled to turn their possession and attacking pressure into clear-cut opportunities, allowing Liverpool to protect their two-goal advantage without facing sustained danger.
Iraola’s side eventually secured all three points, providing a much-needed boost after their difficult start to the league campaign.
Liverpool supporters were also given the opportunity to watch another major summer signing make his Premier League debut, as Bradley Barcola came off the bench for the final 25 minutes.
The France international completed his move from Paris Saint-Germain in a deal reportedly worth up to £123 million and made his first appearance in English top-flight football as Liverpool comfortably saw out the victory.
