Tanko made the remarks on Wednesday during an interview on Sunrise Daily, a programme on Channels Television.
Recounting the incident, he said they were followed to the Benin City residence of former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun. He noted that the attack came as a shock, despite the heavy security surrounding them.
Tanko stated, “It is evident to me that this was an assassination attempt, as we were tracked all the way to Oyegun’s house in GRA, Benin. After a prior engagement, we went to the Chief’s residence, reviewed the event schedule, and proceeded to the venue, a three-story building.
“While we successfully completed our programme without incident, attacks erupted at the venue just five minutes after our departure. Footage showed significant damage. When we returned to Chief Oyegun’s house, despite expecting strong security, gunshots suddenly rang out.”
In a related development, ADC chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo alleged that the assassination attempt on Peter Obi was orchestrated by the Edo State government or its agents.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time, Okonkwo recalled an earlier threat by the current Edo State Governor, Monday Okpehbolo, warning Peter Obi against entering the state without authorization.
Gunmen attacked Peter Obi and other ADC leaders in Edo State on Tuesday, an incident Okonkwo says follows a pattern of intimidation against opposition figures.
