It’s Deeper Than Cash!” – Ric Hassani Reveals Real Reason Gospel Artists Go Secular

Popular Nigerian singer Ikechukwu Eric Ahiauzu, better known as Ric Hassani, has stated that the reason many gospel artists transition to secular music goes beyond financial gain — it’s about personal fulfilment.

Speaking in an interview with Hip TV, Hassani revealed that he began his music journey in the church, but later realised that gospel music was not his true calling.

He explained that several artists who started in gospel eventually move to secular music because they lack the specific gift required for spiritual ministration. According to him, not every talented singer is destined to serve in the church.

“Gospel music goes beyond just singing,” Hassani said. “You must be spiritually gifted to interpret God’s message through song. For instance, someone like Katy Perry could never minister like CeCe Winans. CeCe is clearly anointed to convey the Holy Spirit through her music. Whitney Houston was also blessed, but in a different way.”

Hassani emphasized that not all musicians are meant to serve within the church environment, adding that some, like himself, are meant to inspire the world differently.

“I have Christian songs and I’m a strong Christian. Every one of my albums has at least one gospel track. But that’s not my core calling. My impact lies in a different kind of sound. I can’t do what Frank Edwards or Mercy Chinwo does. If I go into church music now, I probably won’t make any meaningful impact — it’s just not my lane.”

He stressed that the decision to leave gospel music isn’t driven by money.

“Yes, creatives — like everyone else — appreciate money. But the real fulfilment comes from doing what you were made for and thriving in it. If it were only about money, someone like Davido wouldn’t even bother making music — he already has all the money he could ever need.”

According to Hassani, the joy and satisfaction that comes from turning an idea into a piece of music far outweighs financial reward.

“That process of creating, of expressing yourself through sound — it gives a kind of joy that money simply can’t match.”
